About Korattur Lake (Behind AOS)
Korattur Aeri, or Korattur Lake, also known as Vembu Pasumai Thittu, is a lake spread over 990 acres in Korattur, Chennai, India. It is located to the north of the Chennai–Arakkonam railway line. It is one of the largest lakes in the western part of the city.
Korattur Aeri is one of a chain of three water bodies, including the Ambattur Aeri and the Madhavaram Aeri, where surplus water from one is transported to another. The water from the lake had been supplied to Chennai residents for a brief period when there was a shortage in the late 1970s. However, over the years, the lake has been contaminated with sewage and industrial effluents from surrounding areas such as Pattaravakkam, Athipet and Ambattur.
In 2013, the Water Resources Department decided to rejuvenate and beautify the lakes in Ambattur, Madhavaram and Korattur with parks and walkways. The total project costs ₹ 600 million. In 2018, the corporation identified and removed about 550 encroachments along the bank of the lake and the bund will be strengthened to a distance of 3 kilometers.

NEWS ABOUT KORATTUR/KORATTUR LAKE
THE TIMES OF INDIA : 07.09.2020
Volunteers plant 1,000 palm seeds around Korattur lake. A total of 10,000 seeds will be planted in the area. Every Sunday about
t1,000 seeds will be sown, said C Shekharan of Korattur Yeri ..Padhukappu Makkal Iyakkam, the NGO that organised the plantation drive.
THE HINDU:24.4.2020:
Sewage flow into two lakes in Chennai reduces following COVID-19 lockdown:
Officials of the WRD said it was noticed that the sewage discharge into the two lakes has reduced to one-fifth of the earlier amount over the past one month. The decrease in flow of industrial effluents could probably be due to the closure of industrial units around the lake owing to the lockdown. However, the lake was receiving domestic sewage from surrounding localities.
“We have lifted samples at two or three points of both the lakes. For instance, samples have been taken from near the weir of the Ambattur surplus course that transports water to Korattur lake,” said an official.
This is a news article in THE HINDU on effluents being diverted in to the Korattur lake. High time we all take this issue on priority collectively as well as thru our contacts if any in the government. As mentioned in the report now the factories are not running and only domestic effluents are filling the lake it is easy to find the erring residents.
Again the water level already reached the dead end we have to push the government to get the lake desilted and put a permanent stop to the effluents drained into the lake

TIMES OF INDIA: 27.2.2020:
Ravaged by raw sewage, Korattur lake now lies encroached
The Korattur lake , already affected by untreated sewage flowing in, is facing a new threat. Encroachers have ‘marked’ large portions on the western side for ‘
development ’, say activists who hope it will be nipped in the bud.
Spread over 660 acres, it was one of the major water sources for several suburbs but development over the last 30 years had led to residential colonies springing up in the vicinity from where illegal outlets let sewage into it and made its water unpotable.
TIMES OF INDIA: 13.12.2019:
NGT directs Tamil Nadu to form panel to clean Korattur lake
Citing a recent TOI report on pollution in Korattur lake, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) Southern Zone has directed Tamil Nadu chief secretary K Shanmugam to form a committee and formulate an action plan to clean up the water body within six months...
TIMES OF INDIA: 16.12.2019:
Despite NGT order, sewage still flows into Korattur lake
Three days since the southern bench of the National Green Tribunal ordered action to clean up Korattur lake, industrial effluents and sewage continue to be discharged into the water body. There were no measures in place to stop the flow of pollutants till Sunday evening.
THE NEW INDIAN EXPRESS:11.8.2019
While on one hand, lakes across Chennai have been vanishing, on the other, concerned residents of Korattur have tied up with the State government to restore 590 acres of polluted Korattur Lake into a eco-park. The lake near Ambattur will be converted into an eco-park similar to the one present at Chetpet, said officials from the Water Resources Department.
Korattur, a locality in the western parts of Chennai, is surrounded by many hazardous industries and factories. And according to tests by Metro Water, it was found that Korattur lake was highly polluted by toxic industrial effluents and sewage from neighbouring houses too. Turbidity, PH and salinity levels were so high that Metro Water decided against drawing water from the lake when the water crisis was at its peak, two months ago.
Hence, to add a green touch to the otherwise polluted lake, officials had proposed to turn it into an eco-park.
